How to Avoid Scams and Bait-and-Switch Sellers
The rep market has its share of bad actors. Learn red flags, verification techniques, and how to protect yourself from scams, bait-and-switch tactics, and low-quality sellers.
Common Scam Tactics in the Rep Market
While the vast majority of rep sellers are honest businesspeople, scams do happen. The most common tactic is bait-and-switch, where a seller advertises high-quality product photos but ships a much cheaper version. Another scam involves sellers who take payment and never ship, or who ship completely wrong items. Some sellers manipulate reviews by creating fake accounts or offering discounts in exchange for positive feedback. The good news is that these scams are easy to avoid if you know the warning signs. Using a reputable shopping agent provides a critical layer of protection. The agent holds your payment until the item arrives at their warehouse and passes inspection. If the item does not match the listing, the agent can force a refund. Without an agent, you are sending money directly to a stranger in another country with no recourse.
Red Flags to Watch For
Unrealistic Prices
If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Top-tier reps have a floor price based on materials and labor.
No QC Photos
Sellers who refuse to provide QC photos or sample shots are hiding something. Always insist on verification.
New Seller Accounts
Be cautious with sellers who have no sales history, no reviews, and newly created storefronts.
Payment Outside Platform
Never send money via PayPal Friends & Family, crypto, or wire transfer to a seller directly.
How to Verify a Seller
Check Sales History
Look at the seller's transaction count and rating on the marketplace. A high volume with good ratings is a positive sign.
Search Community Reviews
Search the seller's name or store URL on Reddit, Discord, and spreadsheet review sections. Look for consistent feedback.
Request Sample Photos
Before ordering in bulk, buy one item and request detailed QC photos. Compare against the listing photos carefully.
Use Agent Protection
Always purchase through a reputable agent. The agent's escrow system is your strongest protection against scams.
Pro Tip
If a seller messages you outside the marketplace platform asking for direct payment, it is almost certainly a scam. Legitimate sellers process all transactions through the marketplace or agent system.
